Scientists find HIV-AIDs full cure...

A British man with HIV undergoing a pioneering treatment to cure him of the disease has shown “remarkable” progress, doctors have told a newspaper.

Scientists treating the 44-year-old patient are now hopeful of a breakthrough in what has been described as “one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV”.

Results showed the man’s most recent blood test showed no detectable HIV was present.

Results showed the man’s most recent blood test showed no detectable HIV was present.

The man, who has remained anonymous, is the first of 50 people to complete a trial using the two-stage attack on the deadly virus.

The research is being carried out by a collaboration of five of Britain’s top universities organised by the National Health Service.

Mark Samuels, managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure, told the Sunday Times:

This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV. We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV.

This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.

The trial patient told the newspaper that recent blood tests showed no detectable HIV virus was present, although it was too early to confirm that the treatment had worked.

The new therapy aims to overcome a major barrier to clearing the virus from a sufferer’s body that has challenged researchers for decades.

Current methods using antiretroviral therapies (Art) fall short of ridding patients of HIV, as the virus can hide out of the drugs’ reach in the immune system’s T-cells. By sheltering in dormant T-cells the virus can later take over its host and use it to produce thousands of copies of itself, should Art no longer work.

The research by Oxford and Cambridge universities, Imperial College London, University College London, and King’s College London, is testing a “kick and kill” technique to first expose, then destroy the virus. First a vaccine helps the body find infected T-cells.

This is then followed by a course of the drug Vorinostat that awakens the dormant T-cells, which then begin producing HIV proteins that act as a homing beacon to the immune system.

Imperial College London consultant physician Professor Sarah Fidler said the treatment worked in the laboratory and there was “good evidence” it will work in patients. However she added: “We must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy...

Club girl, her lover and two others arrested for withdrawing money from stolen ATM...

Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command on Friday apprehended a young lady, her boyfriend and two others for stealing an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card which belonged to one Musa Alli and withdrew over N300, 000.00 from the account.

The lady, Bamigboye Imoleayo, 24, was arrested by the operatives at a club house (name withheld) in Surulere area of Lagos State over the crime, before arresting three other accomplices, including her boyfriend, Adeyinka Ayodele, the same day in Itori, Ogun State.

The victim, who reported the case at the RRS's office in Alausa, said that he met the suspect at a club in Surulere last week Friday. That the lady had earlier stolen his ATM before memorizing his Personal Identification Number (PIN) during online transfer of funds into his friend's account.
"I thought I had misplaced the card not knowing that the lady had stolen it and thereafter glimpsed at the PIN for withdrawal", he noted. He said that he was shocked on Saturdayafternoon when he received alerts amounting to N90, 000:00 withdrawals.
"while I was still contemplating on how to deal with the issue, I got another debit alert for buying two Infinix phones totalling N84,000:00. I was confused and shocked. I didn’t know what action to take on a Saturday evening…. On Sunday, there was another debit. I couldn’t pin the crime to the lady I met at the club. I lodged a complaint on Monday morning at my bank and I was told that the withdrawals and shopping were legitimately made by me. I reported the incident at the RRS's office on Monday after informing my bank. My emphasis to the police was the withdrawals and shopping totalling N300,000:00. It was unbelievable for me when I was face to face with the suspect, the lady I met at the club. And, she explained everything," he stated.

After the arrest, the lady, Bamigboye Imoleayo, owned up during interrogations that she pocketed the victims ATM card when the owner slept off during their conversation at night at the club.
"I managed to steal the card when Musa (victim) dozed off during our conversations. Initially, I had spied on and crammed his PIN when he was sending money to his colleague via mobile app…. I committed this offence because I was so desperate to re-stock my shop at Wasimi in Ogun State, and also to take care of my only daughter. I never had a rethink while committing the crime. Although, I regretted my action now," she stated.
She further narrated how she in company of her lover withdrew and expended funds from the ATM.
"After I spied on his PIN during a particular banking transaction on his phone, I intended to only withdraw N20,000.00 out of his bank account and then destroy the card…. However, when I withdrew the money, and checked the account balance, I was shocked to see his balance. Afterwards, I withdrew another N70,000.00 again making N90,000.00 that day.  Then, the following day, I called my boyfriend, who instructed me not to destroy the card, but i should come straight to Itori, Ogun State, where he resides. On getting to him, he called two of his friends, Abimbola Akintanna and Owolabi Bamidele, to use the ATM at any nearest bank."
He added that they took the card to a shopping mall in Abeokuta where they bought phones and clothes.
"The following day, we went straight to Abeokuta to use the card. We thought by going this far nobody could trace us. We bought two android phones for N84,000 at a phone store.… We proceeded to a boutique where four of us bought clothes worth N126,000. I recharged my phone with another N2,500 worth of recharge card. The money spent from the account was over N300, 000.00," she revealed.

Two Android phones, 8 pairs of trousers and shirts were recovered from the suspects during a thorough search of their residents. Confirming the arrest, the image maker of Lagos State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, SP Dolapo Badmus, urged members of public to always protect their PIN during banking transaction at any point in time. The suspect and exhibits recovered have been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for prosecution.

We had established links with Boko Haram for exchange of abducted girls – Lai Mohammed...

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to rescue the abducted Chibok girls by Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister spoke at a live programme on Channel Television on Independence titled “Nigeria at 56: Recursive, Resilient, Rising.”

Mohammed said that no group, local or international could claim to have more stake or to be more committed to the rescue of the girls than the Federal Government.

He added that the issue of the rescue of the girls was a humanitarian one that everyone or group should be “passionate but rational about”.

The minister said that contrary to the position of some critics, government had robust counter terrorism policy and had recorded significance success in fighting Boko Haram in the North East.

He noted that the fact that the Chibok girls were yet to be rescued should not be a yardstick to write off the achievements of government in decimating the Boko Haram. Mohammed recalled that upon assumption of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, many parts of the North-East were under the control of the Boko Haram and were not safe and accessible.

The minister said that the situation was not the same today as no part of the North East region was under the control of the group.

He reiterated that Boko Haram had been decimated and government was working daily to ensure the release of the abducted girls.

The North-East is free now, students are returning to schools, all the towns and communities hitherto under the control of the terrorists have been liberated and those who fled their homes are gradually returning,” he said.

The minister also recalled that when the Buhari administration assumed power, it was 410 days after the Chibok girls were abducted without any clue to their rescue by the previous government.

He noted that in all cases of abduction, especially by terrorists, 24 hours was critical to ensuring prompt rescue, adding that the government in power then did not utilise the intelligence then.

The minister said that the present administration had thrice established links with the Boko Haram for the exchange of the abducted girls with the arrested members of the terrorist group.

He explained that on each occasion, the efforts were thwarted by either the link with the terrorist, fresh demands by Boko Haram or division in the camp of the terrorist group.

Mohammed said government had not foreclosed negotiation with the group on the release of the girls but it wanted to ensure that the link were genuine and credible.

He said government appreciated the efforts of the “Bring Back Our Girls” (BBOG) group but noted that “the administration is as concerned as they are and ready to work with them in ensuring the release of the girls.”

Mrs Oby Ezekwesele, one of the leaders of the BBOG reiterated the position of the minister that 24 hours was critical to ensuring success or failure in cases of abduction by terrorists, adding that the past administration failed in that regard. Ezekwesele, however, said the BBOG group was disappointed that more than 900 days after the girls’ abduction, there was no tangible evidence or convincing plans by government on their release.

She said the group resumed its agitation with vigour to canvass citizens engagement in the release of the girls and ensure that government did not stay away from the parents of the girls.

She underscored the need for government to carry along the group in its rescue efforts and be consistent in its messages and briefings. She pledged the support of the group to the government in ensuring a safe rescue of the abducted girls.

World Bank, food technologists promote preservation tech for agribusiness...

By Olasunkanmi Akoni

Amid quest by Nigerian governments at all levels to drive diversification of the economy away from oil base, a World Bank sponsored campaign for agro-product preservation technology has commenced in the country.

Food technology experts at an investment forum last week in Lagos canvassed for application of Flash Dryer technology for agricultural produce in order to make them less perishable and stem the magnitude of wastages amongst small and medium scale agribusinesses.

They posited that  there was the need to resuscitate and boost these businesses with the technology in order to get their products into export market to attract foreign exchange, as well as stimulate the nation’s economy.

Presently, over 40 per cent of agricultural products in Nigeria are lost to high moisture content which could have been easily prevented with the Flash Dryer technology.

According to Prof. Abdul-Lateef Sanni, a food science and technology expert who is the Dean, College of Food Science and Human Ecology of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, FUNAAB, “the reason for the forum is to address the recession and quest for diversification of Nigeria economy and to encourage us to bring out some best technology that Nigerians can use to add value to agricultural commodities.

Secondly, the Federal Government of Nigeria just launched agricultural promotion policy aimed at encouraging local and export market opportunities for Nigerians. “Therefore, we are showcasing abilities to reducing post harvest losses using Flash Dryer which is the best opportunity now than before. “There is no forex to import equipment, so we are saying we have some technologies we are taking to other countries that we can actually buy into and go on with our agribusiness investment. “One of the uniqueness of the Flash Dryer is the fact that it has 20-23 percent internal rate of return and has led to 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption.” “There are some value-chain activities we have in the past that government needs to sustain, one of them is what we are promoting at this forum”. He disclosed that there are agro-based SMEs that are moribund due to this problem of lack of preservation technology, and  though the Bank of Industry is trying to help some of them only a few have received the Flash Dryer. “So these are the areas where government’s intervention is needed by spending more on this technology in order to resuscitate the moribund industries and also strengthen the large scale industries that are working hard to sustain their enterprises. The forum was organized under the initiative of the World Bank Council for Agricultural Economy in West and Central Africa, targeted at “Up-scaling the Nigerian Flash Drying Experience for Sustainable Regional Trade and Income Generation in West Africa”, UDESWA. Sanni said, the World Bank and  UDESWA are  up-scaling the flash drying experience to other countries like Sierra-Leone, Benin Republic and Ghana, adding: “we are about to end the project and we felt to share some of the findings to the would-be investors and some active players in the Small Medium Enterprises, SMEs, in Nigeria before we go to other countries.” He stated: “This is a technology that can be used to preserve commodities because the bulk of what we produce in Nigeria is lost, 40 percent is lost to wastage at post harvest. If these products are dried they can stay long period of six months and up to a year and that means we will lose nothing again to wastage and then we have value-added products. “When we talk about technology, what comes readily to mind is China, Brazil as they were. Some of these technologies are available locally, so we do not have to spend forex to get these, once we get them locally, it boost local economy and this particular technology is one, there are several others lying fallow...
