Man gets 40 years in jail for throwing boiling water on sleeping gay couple

An Atlanta man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after he was found guilty on Wednesday after he threw boiling hot water on a gay couple, Anthony Gooden and Marquez Tolbert, as they slept. The man, Martin Blackwell was convicted of 10 counts – two counts of aggravated assault and eight counts of aggravated battery – in the February attack on the gay couple.

The jury deliberated for about 90 minutes after the brief trial and returned with the guilty verdict. Prosecutors have said that on the night of the attack, Blackwell filled the largest pot in his home with water and set it to boil before tossing it on Gooden and Tolbert, who were sleeping and who had been dating for about a month.
The couple had been staying with Gooden's mother, who was dating Blackwell.
"You were soulless, malicious and a violent person [during the attack]," Fulton County Superior Court Judge Henry Newkirk said to Blackwell Wednesday before sentencing him, according to the AJC.
Prosecutors argued that Blackwell was motivated by  homophobia.

Tolbert testified at trial that Blackwell grabbed him after the attack and said, "Get out of my house with all that gay sh**"

Gooden and Tolbert's injuries were severe.

Gooden was hospitalized for about a month, including two weeks in a coma, and while his boyfriend, Tolbert was hospitalized for 10 days.
Both men had several surgeries and both testified at Blackwell's trial.
Blackwell's defense attorneys did not present any evidence at trial or call any witnesses but they argued that the attack was reckless rather than premeditated.
"It's not about hate. It's about old-school culture, old-school thinking," attorney Monique Walker told jurors.
Blackwell's defense argued he was motivated by a sense of disrespect for the victims' behavior in the home – a claim the prosecution dismissed.

After the verdict, Tolbert told reporters he felt "justice was served," adding "I'm ecstatic," Tolbert said Wednesday.

Branded witches, Calabar pastor, church and family members tied two children to a tree and beat them with machete

Two children were rescued this morning from being killed by some members of Divine Zion of God Church Ikot Abasi Effiom district of Akpabuyo LGA and their family members after they were branded witches.

According to CrossRiverWatch, led by one prophet David Effiom Zion and some members of their family, the children, aged, 7 and 10, were accused by their cousin of being witches and allegedly snatching her baby in a dream. They tied the children to a tree and assaulted them with machete.

Below is the report by CRW:
"The stigma that confronted the children since they were branded witches took on a new dimension when the children were taken to the forest, tied to a tree, battered and assaulted with a machete by some members of the family, leaving them with cuts and bruises all over their bodies.

"This happened on the heels of the screening of the movie ‘The Fake Prophet’ in Ikot Offiong Ambai community in Akpabuyo Local Government Area (LGA) by Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a child’s rights organization based in Calabar

"Respite came the way of the children when an uncle who arrived from town demanded the release of the children with threats of calling the police and on learning of BRCI’s visit, took the children to the venue where the movie highlighting issues of child abuse and witchcraft branding was being screened.

"In his opening remark, the Secretary of BRCI, Barrister James Ibor noted that the movie screening was to mark the 2016 Day of the African Child, recounting the story of how the day was set aside by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now African Union (AU) in 1991.

"Speaking also, Theresa Okpa who is the Executive Director of Mediatrix Development Foundation (MDF), the NGO of the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Dr. Linda Ayade said issues of child witch branding is abuse of the rights of children and assured that the Mediatrix Foundation is partnering with organizations like BRCI to address issues relating to the abuse of children’s rights.

"In the same vein, Rev. Okon James, the Assistant Pastor of the Mount Zion
Lighthouse Full Gospel Church Ikot Offiong Ambai, emphatically noted that their church does not promote the belief in witches and usually condemned any actions that abuse or torture children on the grounds of being a witch.

"Meanwhile, the rescued children were later taken to the Community Health Center where BRCI paid the bills for them to be given proper medical attention, while ensuring that the uncle who rescued them temporarily keep the children in his custody."

WOMAN BATHES RAPIST WITH ACID IN ABUJA

A 31-year-old businesswoman, Nneka Nwachukwu of Dape Village, Abuja, told a Wuse Zone 2 High Court that she poured acid on Peter Nwogu, because he raped her. Nwachukwu, led in evidence by her counsel, Moneka Azubike, told the court on the 14th of June that Nwogu, the defendant, came to her house and forced her to sleep with him.

The defendant was first arraigned on April 11, 2014 by the police for the offence of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code. She said that on December 1, 2013, she went to her town meeting at Wuse and came back around 10 p.m.

She said: “When I came back, I warmed my food which I came back with, then I went to see my landlord, Ikechukwu Obi, to pay my house rent. “I came back to my room and saw Peter Nwogu, who is my church member in my room. He told me that he travelled but could not reach home because it was late.

“I welcomed him as a church member and he then asked me if I have food. I gave him the food I warmed and I went to take my bath.” The defendant said when she came back from the bathroom, she saw the deceased with only his boxer and he made love advances to her.

She said: “I tried to stop him, but he didn’t. We argued and in the process he forced me to sleep with him. I was shouting, but nobody heard me. “I bit him and he bit me too. He was so strong that I had to pour acid on him. That was in my room. I then ran out to my landlord’s room.’’

She added that she explained to her landlord what had happened and he followed her to her room and saw the deceased, who asked for help. She continued: “The deceased asked my landlord to give him water. My landlord took his clothes from my room and gave him and I went to church to tell my parish priest what happened.

“I did not know that the acid I poured on him will lead to his death. I kept the acid in my room because I had been a victim of rape and there have been complaints of break-ins in my area. “On December 2, I went to Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, to report the matter but I was told that the matter has been reported as the deceased was already dead.”

The prosecuting counsel, Patrick Ogele, cross-examined the defendant and Justice Mamman Kolo adjourned the matter till July 1 for continuation of defence.
