THE TRAIL OF 8 NIGERIANS ACCUSED OF DRUG DEALINGS FROM MOUNTAIN OF FIRE CHURCH IN CAMBODIA ENDS IN DENIAL

The trial of eight Nigerian men and a Cambodian woman accused of dealing drugs crystal methamphetamine from a Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Church in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, ended on Tuesday, August 9, with the woman claiming she had no idea that the smartphone boxes she delivered in 2014 were filled with drugs.

During the third and final day of questioning at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Nigerian national Favour Nnabuife Okorom, 36, and the Cambodian defendant, Mam Vinyong, 25, were questioned over their involvement in a crystal methamphetamine ring that police say operated out of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Church in Meanchey district in 2014 and early 2015.

Ms. Vinyong admitted to delivering smartphone boxes for defendant Tony Mmaduka Chukwuonye, but claimed she was unaware that there were drugs inside. The pair became close after meeting at the church following the end of her previous relationship, she said, adding that he had paid for powdered milk for her baby.

"At the end of October and early November, I delivered the goods two or three times, and in December I delivered them one more time," she said, adding that she was paid $100 per day for acting as a courier.

"Mr. Tony just told me they contained valuable objects and I thought they might be brand-new smartphones," she said.

However, Roeung Pheap, a bureau chief at the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department, refuted Ms. Vinyong’s claim of innocence.

"Before we went to arrest her, our undercover officers reported that she was delivering the drugs to other dealers, and we know Mr. Tony was the one who often ordered her to do it," he said.

Like the seven other Nigerian defendants who testified during two previous days of hearings, Mr. Okorom denied everything. Asked about receiving drugs from Ms. Vinyong at a KFC restaurant at Phnom Penh’s Sovanna Shopping Center, he said,

"I had only lived in Cambodia for two months and had never been to KFC.”
A verdict is due on September 12.

indonesian cremates executed nigerian drug convicts.

says will never stop executing people on death row Indonesia executed four drug convicts Friday but 10 others due to face the firing squad were given an apparent reprieve in a confused process one lawyer condemned as a “complete mess”.

The executions on a remote prison island went ahead despite strong protests from international rights groups, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the European Union who had urged Indonesia not to proceed.

Michael Titus Igweh Four inmates — three Nigerians and one Indonesian — were put to death just after midnight. One of the Nigerian prisoners was cremated hours later, while the bodies of the three others were being prepared for burial.

Questions swirled about the handling of the process, which saw the other 10 prisoners slated for death — including from India, Pakistan and Zimbabwe — spared at the last minute.

Authorities did not give a reason for the reprieve, but the prison island where they were expected to be executed in outdoor clearings was hit by a major storm as the other sentences were carried out.

Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo said Friday the 10 inmates had been returned to their cells, suggesting their executions were not imminent.

“The fate of the other 10 we will determine later.

We will see when the right time will be,” Prasetyo told reporters.

“But one thing is for sure — we will never stop executing people on death row.

” Local prisons chief Molyanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said the major security seen in recent days around the island had been reduced and he thought more executions were unlikely in the near future.

Ricky Gunawan — whose client Humphrey Jefferson Ejike Eleweke was among those tied to a post and shot in the jungle clearing — said lawyers awaiting the grim news were kept in the dark as to why the executions didn’t proceed as planned.

“I would say the execution this morning was a complete mess,” Gunawan told AFP from Cilacap, near Nusakambangan, a remote island housing several high-security jails.

“No clear information was provided to us about the time of execution, why only four (were executed) and what happens to the 10 others.

” Family members had already been shocked to learn on Thursday morning that their relatives would be put to death a day ahead of schedule. Distraught relatives rushed to Nusakambangan to say farewell to their loved ones.

 – Process ‘not respected’ – President Joko Widodo has defended dramatically ramping up the use of capital punishment, saying that Indonesia is fighting a war on drugs and that traffickers must be heavily punished. Friday’s executions were the third under Widodo since he took office in 2014.

The last round was in April 2015, when authorities put to death eight drug convicts, including two Australians.

The executed Indonesian was named as Freddy Budiman, while the three Nigerians were Seck Osmane, Humphrey Jefferson Ejike Eleweke and Michael Titus Igweh.

Another of Eleweke’s lawyers, Afif Abdul Qoyim, told AFP the execution should not have gone ahead as his client this week filed a legal appeal.

“When this process in not respected, that means that this is no longer a country that upholds the law, nor human rights,” he said.

Amnesty International has identified what it calls “systematic flaws” in the trials of several of the death row inmates, and urged Indonesia not to proceed while appeals for clemency were pending.

Two people whose cases had raised high-profile international concern among rights groups were not executed.

The first was Pakistani Zulfiqar Ali, whom rights groups say was beaten into confessing to heroin possession, leading to his 2005 death sentence.

The other was Indonesian woman Merri Utami, who was caught with heroin in her bag as she came through Jakarta airport and claims she was duped into becoming a drug mule.

The National Commission on Violence Against Women, which has been lobbying for Utami to receive clemency, called for answers over the fate of the 10 remaining prisoners.

“We hope the attorney general’s office will provide a clear and transparent explanation,” the commission’s Sri Nurherwati told AFP.

Bauchi governor alleges his predecessor, Isa Yuguda, withdrew N1bn in one day

Bauchi state governor, Abubakar Mohammed, has accused his predecessor, Isa Yuguda, of withdrawing N1 billion in one day from one of the state's account with multiples of N10 million cheques. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja yesterday July 27th, Mohammed said this was discovered by a probe panel he constituted to look into the Financial records of Yuguda's administration.

He says the report of the panel will be submitted to him in the coming weeks.
"In one day, the sum of N1bn was taken out of one account of the government with N10m cheques. Several N10m cheques but I would not be able to put a figure on the total recovery because like I said, the work of the committee is ongoing. When I took over on May 29th 2015, the state was owing civil servants four months salaries, a state where civil servants and pensioners were owed N14.5 billion gratuity, a state where other loans comprising commercial and contractual liabilities amounted to over N100 billion"he said
He also accused Yuguda of squandering N2 billion ecological fund he received from the last administration.

fg-committed-safeguarding-nigerias-marine-environment-amaechi.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the Federal Government will continue to safeguard Nigeria’s marine environment to improve on revenue generation.

Amaechi Amaechi stated this on Friday in Lagos at the inauguration of the Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence System (CCCIS) of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

“It is pertinent, therefore, to note that the development of this facility began with an approval in 2013 with the aim of providing Business Intelligence for the movement of vessels and cargoes as well as providing improved and secured communications within our waterways for enhancement of efficiency within the nation’s seaports.

“I wish to reiterate that this is one of the positive responses to the dynamics of port modernisation as well as device for stemming the safety, security and operational challenges facing the port system and the maritime industry.

“Let me state that the seaports in Nigeria provide one of the major platforms for trade facilitation with about 90 per cent of our imports and exports being done through the seaports.’’ The Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ms Hadiza Usman, said the authority would undertake detailed security assessment of port facilities.

“On issues relating to maritime security, responsibility is placed on the ports authority to undertake detailed security assessment of port facilities and identify threats in order to checkmate them. “Furthermore, it would enable us to surmount security and safety challenges within our operations with the capability of an interface with stakeholders aiding us to track and record maritime security breaches.

“In addition, this technology enables the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to ensure that all revenue leakages are blocke

“In furtherance of the Federal Government’s efforts toward revitalising our economy. “Let me reiterate that in the days ahead, the Nigerian Ports Authority will be playing pro-active roles in the digital space. “Ensuring that there is synergy and collaboration among relevant agencies like the Nigerian Navy, the Nigeria Customs Service, NIMASA, and all other security and intelligent agencies.

“For the purpose of sharing information, documentation to enhance maritime safety, security as well as blocking all revenue leagues,“ Usman said. NPA’s Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Mr Mohammed Bello-Koko, said the system would block revenue leakages in port operations.

“Constant upgrading cannot be over emphasised, especially at the time the Federal Government is focusing on achieving robust economy in all sectors. “The launching of the Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence Centre that we are about to witness today, ASPEAKS volume of our preparedness and commitment to ensure best practises in our operations while creating an enabling environment for effective synergy with stakeholders in the sub-sector.

“This facility which I consider a game changer will enhance efficiency; improve this administration’s aggressive drive to block revenue leakages and impact positively on security. “What we are about to launch today will provide online real time monitoring and recording of port channels’ activities with emphasis on safety, security, operations and of course revenue generation.

“It would also provide seamless communication between ports within the country, “ Bello-Koko said. Bello-Koko urged stakeholders to partner with NPA as the authority looked forward to a robust synergy in order to utilise the system effectively.

Ignore allegations of corruption against my ministers- President Buhari tells Nigerians

President Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to ignore orchestrated attempts to ruin the integrity of ministers and other senior government officials, who are being tarred with the brush of corruption without any concrete evidence.

Reacting to reports, particularly by online media, that the immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), who is also Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, is being investigated over crude oil swap deals and gas liftings during his tenure as GMD of the petroleum corporation, President Buhari appealed for decent and civilized comments,

particularly when it has to do with the integrity of those who are serving the country.
"Terrible and unfounded comments about other people's integrity are not good. We are not going to spare anybody who soils his hands, but people should please wait till such individuals are indicted," the President said.
President Buhari reiterated the administration's commitment to probity, accountability and integrity, promising that transparency remains a watchword, which would never be trifled with.
